Hebrew High
A new
exciting and enriching curriculum for Hebrew High
School.
Our first class is
on Tuesday evening, September 16th from 6:30 –
8:00 p.m. Our eighth graders provide the gateway
to the next three years of continuing Jewish
Education and studies. The students will have the
opportunity to integrate crafts, movies, trips,
speakers and hands on activities tying into Jewish
themes. Our ninth and tenth graders will embark on
an exploration of Tefillah during some of our
class sessions. Though many students are familiar
with the service, we are going to ponder such
questions as: What do the prayers mean? From where
do they come? Why are they said? Upon examining
such queries and working on the skills component
of the service, we believe that everyone will have
a deeper connection with prayer. Conversational
Hebrew, current events and delving into Jewish
ethics and values are an integral part of our
curriculum as well.

Madrachim Program
Pine
Brook Jewish Center High School Students (9th and
10th graders)
Madrichim Program
At Pine Brook Jewish Center, Jewish teenagers
are considered a valuable asset. Our goal is to
provide teens with opportunities to engage in
meaningful work while continuing their connection
to the synagogue community.
This
fall, PBJC Religious School is introducing a
“Madrichim program” for 9th and 10th graders,
which will provide them an opportunity to become
mentors and role models for our primary grade
students. “Madrich” (m.) or madricha (f.)
literally means “one who shows the way.”
Specifically, these students will assume a role as
teaching assistant or tutor, and will work with
the teachers on class assignments, projects and
other duties on Sunday mornings.
The
goals for the Madrichim are:
• To serve as role models for our younger students
by demonstrating appropriate classroom behaviors
and by showing them that spending time and
learning in synagogue is important to them.
• To serve as junior teaching partners to the
professional teaching staff.
• To continue to build their own Jewish identities
by serving the community (successful madrichim
will receive community service hours)
Requirements:
• Must be a student in good standing in the Hebrew
High School program
• Must have graduated from the PBJC Religious
School (successfully completed kitah hey)
• Must be able to read Hebrew
• Must be familiar with basic Shabbat blessings
and prayers
• Must have demonstrated maturity in interacting
with younger children; some working experience
with children (e.g. babysitting, CIT) is helpful.
• Must be able to commit to Sunday morning classes
as assigned throughout the school year
Responsibilities (not limited to):
• Help the teaching staff create a warm, safe and
positive learning experience
• Work one-on-one with students who need extra
help (e.g. students who have been absent or need
extra help in Hebrew)
• Work one-on-one with students who need
enhancement work (who are ahead of their
classmates)
• Create and teach a mini-lesson on an agreed
topic with the help of the classroom teacher;
choose a story or book chapter to read to the
class on an agreed upon subject (e,g, find a story
to read about tzedakah)
• Help to lead groups during small group
activities
• Create ideas for bulletin boards
• Create samples for future art projects (e.g.
plan an art project for Passover)
• Lead a game (e.g. create a game to review
Chanukah vocabulary)
• Limited administrative duties (e.g., greeting
the children, accompanying students to another
room, sanctuary, office or bathroom where needed,
collect tzedakah, correct student work, and so
forth)
