"OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! "
Religious School Education at the Pine Brook Jewish Center
If you took advantage of the wonderful programs offered by our Religious School —oh the places you could go! Whatever happened to the Hebrew School from our childhood? At the Pine Brook Jewish Center, it is new and improved with creative curriculum, lots of fun family programming, and wonderful Rabbi,
Cantor and Educational Director involvement.
To provide a high quality, stimulating, and engaging Jewish education that helps foster a strong Jewish identity, community participation and love of Judaism that will inspire our children to learn our history, traditions, philosophy, and the Hebrew language, now and throughout their lives.
In addition to creating a warm, welcoming environment, something highly desired according to a recent Parent Survey,
we have implemented several innovative programs to help make this vision a success.
Mensch of the Month Award
We recently instituted a
Mensch of the Month Award which encourages the students to perform good deeds and have a positive affect on local, distant, and international communities. Ryan Kehr, the first student to receive this honor, initiated a snack sale to help raise funds for Hurricane victims. This sale earned $641 and was donated to a conservative shul in Florida destroyed by flooding. Prayer books purchased with this money will have bookplates honoring Ryan and his friends.
Rachel Langer, Marcy Pleener, and Eden Weinflash took their prize in December by selling holiday gifts to raise funds that will be donated to the Jaffa Institute. Keep on the lookout for many more mensch-like activities coming our way!
The Christmas Menorahs
Part of our Religious School curriculum focuses on the importance of fighting to maintain our Jewish identity as well as moral development. To this end, Betty and Jill Bernstein introduced the children, and their families to
The Christmas Menorahs, a true story about how one town pulled together to fight anti-Semitism. Betty read the book to many of the classes, a theatre troupe performed this inspiring story, and Janice Cohn, the author of
The Christmas Menorahs, spoke to the Bet, Gimmel and Daled classes. The children were enraptured by this story, the performance and the author’s presentation.
Class Shabbat Dinners
The first Class Shabbat Dinner and Service of the school year was held on Friday, December 9 for the Dalet class. This program offered the whole family a Shabbat experience with prayers led by the Rabbi and Cantor. Thanks to Jill Weiss, Nancy Weiss and the committee members, it was a huge success. They worked hard to get a great turnout (over 75% participation) and make it fun for the students and their families. The catering by Jerusalem Restaurant was fabulous and everyone had a great time. Following the dinner, the Dalet students were exceptional at the Friday night service. Mark you calendars for the future Class Shabbat Dinners and Services—Hey (/1/27), Gimmel (3/24), Bet (4/7)!
Bet-Hey has the
opportunity to share a Shabbat experience with the
entire family. Services are co-led by the
Rabbi and Cantor. Order of service, prayers,
songs and traditions are shared with family and
friends during dinner. A Traditional service
following dinner in which children and families
participate make this evening a very special one.
Watch the calendar for Shabbat dates for your
class and join us!
Post-Hey Class
The Religious School is introducing a post-Hey class to help older children maintain their Jewish learning and identity. Beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2006 from 7–8:30pm , Betty will teach a weekly post-Hey class with Rabbi Elkins and Cantor Toren. The curriculum was developed with the help of prospective students to ensure relevance and appeal. The first semester’s theme is “Jewish Identity” which will be taught through discussion, videos, guest speakers, special events, and mitzvah projects. Special events include cooking with Cantor Toren, dinner out with Cantor Toren and painting Jewish-themed murals in every classroom.
The Menshinger
Thanks to the hard work of Andrea Orris and the Religious School staff, the first edition of
The Menschinger: Hebrew School Happenings was delivered by e-mail on December 1. This monthly newsletter helps inform Religious School parents of the past month’s curriculum highlights by grade and of upcoming events for the new month. So far, the response has been very positive. Remember to check your e-mail for the next edition of
The Menschinger!
We thank you for your support of the Religious School and welcome you to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities offered. If you
