Project Simcha
What is Project Simcha?
Pine Brook Jewish Center
has undertaken a congregation-wide mitzvah of
writing our own new Torah scroll.

Professional photographer Jordan Basem has generously offered his help in continuing the fundraising for Project Simcha by putting up for sale the photos he took at the Torah march and dedication. Photos will be available for viewing here and may be purchased as 8x10 frameable prints for $18 each with all proceeds going towards Project Simcha. With the Ross Challenge, these proceeds will be doubled! Please make checks payable to PBJC and allow 7-10 days.
For questions or more information and to place an order please contact Barbara Herman in the Synagogue office, 973-244-9800 ext. 11.
A year long process
The year-long process began around the time of Simchat Torah, when we rewound the Torah Scroll
and started reading the Bereishiet,
from the beginning again. We have now completed the Torah.
The final torah dedication event took place on March 18th. Click here to view photos of that wonderfully moving day.
304,805 letters were lovingly and meticulously written on our behalf by our sofer, or scribe, Rabbi Zerach Greenfield. He wrote on parchment, just as his fellow scribes have for centuries, using a feather quill.
Every member of the PBJC community had the opportunity to fulfill the 613th commandment of writing a Torah and “write this song for ourselves and tell the story of our people for future generations.” (Deuteronomy 31:19). Rabbi Finkel has said that the Torah defines us as a people.
What Project Simcha Will Mean for Our Community
Beyond nourishing our souls by writing a Torah,
Project Simcha
can create connections among our community now,
and to future generations.
It can provide us the means to strengthen
our physical “house” by beautifying Scheinman
Hall. The
plan is to make it an even more special warm,
welcoming space for simchas and congregation
events, including the High Holidays.
Donated funds from the dedications will be
allocated for the enhancement of Scheinman Hall, a
long-time goal of the congregation.
The intent is to increase the enjoyment of
how we use the space now as well as to inspire
families to hold their simcha
celebrations, right here at our own shul,
more and more.
Project Simcha can bring us together for years to come, each week on Shabbat
as we read from the Torah,
and each time we come together for events, simchas, and holidays.
